Even Santa can suffer a case of the holiday blues. In this 1974 stop-motion holiday family favorite, a sparkly eyed Mrs. Claus (voiced by Shirley Booth) sings and tells about the year her hubby felt too weary and too unappreciated to prepare for his annual Christmas rounds. Mickey Rooney stars as the voice of Santa, a rosy-nosed puppet who travels incognito to Southtown in search of his tiniest reindeer, Vixen, and two well-meaning elves. Seems Mrs. Santa sent them to find proof of Christmas spirit--but all they've discovered is ambivalence about Santa's year off. Luckily, when Santa arrives and befriends a buck-toothed lad named Ignatius Thistlewhite, spirits begin to lift rapidly. Adult fans of this cousin to the 1970 television special Santa Claus Is Coming to Town will remember it as the Heat and Snow Miser movie--their vaudevillian theme songs, complete with trombone and piano riffs, are hard to forget; but other treasured musical moments include "I Believe in Santa Claus," "I'll Have a Blue Christmas Without You," and "Here Comes Santa Claus." --Liane Thomas

Yes, it's that time of years again, when anyone old enough to remember these beloved Rankin & Bass classics will be reliving childhood memories watching these shows during the holiday season. It just never seemed like Christmas until Rudolph, Frosty and the rest of the animated holiday gang came on TV each year.
The great new is most of these are available to buy on DVD! Which means you can watch them whenever you want and they look better than ever! This review is for the older release of this holiday special which looks crisp and clean with vibrant colors. There are no special features, but the inclusion of two more Rankin & Bass specials 'Nestor, The Long Eared Christmas Donkey' and 'Rudolph's Shiny New Year' more than makes up for it.
So join Heat Miser, his brother Snow Miser,Rudolph,Nestor, Santa and the rest of the Rankin & Bass holiday gang for some very fond memories and Holiday fun!

TYWSC is an animation masterpiece by the remarkable Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rankin/Bass had a prolific stretch of productions using stop-motion puppet animation ("Animagic"), beginning with the ever-popular Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1962.
Many of these Rankin/Bass "Animagic" productions are interesting on several levels, since they often pulled the holiday away from religious moorings (with a couple of exceptions) and contributed to the huge holiday commercial machine (music, decorations, TV, now video and DVD) but at the same time celebrated the secular-humanist qualities of Christmas, such as cheer and pleausure of giving or sharing for their own sake. TYWSC, like some of these others, is in fact a pagan, feminist and still moralizing tour de force.

Let me first say that i do not own this DVD, YET.
I have seen this movie many times, on cable. It is my favorite (Christmas) movie.
I only gave it three stars because i just have seen this movie, i do not own this DVD.
I will give it a better review, when i get it during Christmas time.
